Kid Friendly Gardening:

Family gardening can act as a catalyst for teaching young children valuable lessons about hard work, food, conservation and responsibility. Though growing your own fruits and vegetables takes time and intentionality the benefits far outweigh the demands of at home gardening.  Gardening is a perfect daily activity for stay at home moms and homeschoolers, the backyard or garden plot becomes an extension of the classroom.

Gardening For Everyone:

Furthermore, at home gardening can happen on a much smaller scale if you happen to lack space or live in an apartment building one potted tomato plant or even a small in house herb garden can still prove to be valuable. Here are our recommended garden supplies to get you and your family outdoors and into the soil.

Kid Friendly Gardening

Seeds:

Firstly, it is important to decide exactly what you want to grow before you set out. Consider your climate and how much sun your garden patch will receive in a day. Tomates, strawberries and vegetables are fairly easy to grow with the correct amount of sun and water. Some lettuces can get started in the ground directly end of February to Early March.

Seed Starter Tray :

These seed starters are great for beginners, each are prepared for seeds and will break down once planted in the ground.  The pods minimize mess, and toddlers can plant the seeds with ease.

Gardening Soil :

Undoubtedly, quality gardening soil is a must to ensure strong roots that will withstand the elements. Also the soil will improve the growth and health of your vegetables and plants from seed to harvest. When you require  quality soil outdoors, search for wholesale options or support your local gardening center. Not only does this help the gardening community but it also saves you money.

Kids Gardening Tools :

Although, these gardening tools aren’t necessary, they are lovely to have. The children take to them and really enjoy having some independence in and around the garden. From the gloves to the shovel each helps the kids really invest in the project of gardening. See my post here about the values gardening teaches young sprouts. https://beestingsandhoney.com/gardening-for-kids/

Waterproof Shoes:

Since you are in and out of mud and water, waterproof shoes are handy. We prefer rain boots because they are easy to remove and even easier to clean without consequence. Amazon has a great collection of toddler rain boots that are reasonably priced, plus the boots can double as winter boots as well. If new shoes are in the budget try your local Goodwill, I found a pair of brand new rain boots for  $4.32

Watering Can:

Furthermore, a good watering can is essential to gardening and is especially helpful if your hose isn’t as easy to access. We use water bottles for the seedlings while indoors, and then the water can outside. The differing streams of water help to strengthen the plant, as the plant grows so should the stream.

Raised Garden Bed / Garden Plot:

Finally, these garden beds are just lovely when starting a family garden. The upfront cost is an investment but they make up their worth in the money you save on produce from April to September. Gardening at ground level can make for sore muscles and these garden beds alleviate that strain which is an added bonus.
