In my house , a  homemade gluten free label was translated as: warning do not eat.  Many nights, my sport of a husband ate claggy, mussy creations that poorly resembled some of our household favorites. Shortly ,after venturing the gluten-free journey I started to think that my days with coffee cake, macaroni and cheese and any baked goods were over.

The Essentials of Gluten Free Cooking:

Though store bought items have come a long way, some still taste like sawdust. On top of that , it was difficult to stay on budget when purchasing pre-packaged gluten free specific items. After much research and plenty of trial and error. I have discovered how to have my gluten -free cake and eat it too. You need the right pantry staples, and the corresponding kitchen tools that will help you create the ultimate gluten-free foods. Every Friday we actually eat pizza and it looks and tastes like pizza, Praise Jesus.

Pantry Staples

King Arthur’s Gluten Free Flour Gluten- free flour lacks the richness that flour has, it is very bland. In order to increase the flavor profile, buttermilk powder fits the bill. You add it to your dry ingredients and it gives depth to your bakes, and savory dishes. It can be used in a variety of recipes from fried chicken to buttermilk pancakes.

Judee’s Buttermilk Powder. Gluten- free flour lacks the richness that flour has, it is very bland. In order to increase the flavor profile, buttermilk powder fits the bill. You add it to your dry ingredients and it gives depth to your bakes, and savory dishes. It can be used in a variety of recipes from fried chicken to buttermilk pancakes.

Pompeian Cooking Spray. And as aforementioned above, gluten free flour is sticky, it loves all surfaces and makes it difficult to handle. This non-stick cooking spray keeps your bakes intact and your pans unscratched.

Essential Kitchen Tools

Silicone Pans: I have found that silicone based cooking pans make good friends with gluten free cooking. From pizza to bundt cakes nothing sticks to these pans. They are easy to clean, most are BPA free, they have only improved my cooking experiences.

Silicone Mats: This silicone mat is especially helpful when crafting pies, scones or empanadas.  Even well floured surfaces such as granite or a cutting board do not work well with gluten free paper. Many recipes suggest using parchment paper, however this mat is washable and reusable.

Hand- Mixer: In order to mimic the gluten in flour, gluten free flour requires a boost from baking soda, eggs, butter, ect and a hand mixer adds the required air to get a good rise. I have a Kitchen-Aid stand mixer which I highly recommend but it is quite the expense. (Thank God for my mother in law.) For those of us needing a budget friendly option, this hand mixer is very nice.

Pastry Scraper: Finally, a pastry scraper is a great little kitchen staple. You can use it to collect chopped vegetables from the cutting board. It is very helpful when maneuvering gluten-free dough.
