7 degrees or 92 degrees to my kids the temperature doesn’t matter. They are wired for the great outdoors, come what may. Naturally with a temperature of 3 degrees, and snow fall my restless toddlers wanted to go outside. When this mama adamantly denied their venture outside , I needed to make life inside more entertaining and appealing el pronto.

An Easy Game for Teaching Toddlers Colors:

With soup warmly cooking away in the crockpot, I decided to concoct a soup the kids could play with.  As we gathered a large stock pot, ladles, foam blocks the learning and engagement went from a slow simmer to a rapid boil. Alphabet soup is the perfect indoor game focused on color sorting, shape classification and fine motor skills.

Items Needed:

Foam Blocks

Large Pot or Bucket

Ladles or Soups

Construction Paper ( Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Purple)

Ways to Play:

Color Sort:

Each player gets a piece of construction paper, one color per player. Place the blocks in and around the stock pot, with the colored paper surrounding the play area.. Each player must use their ladle to fish out only their assigned color. Without using only the ladle they have to carry a block to their paper. The player who fills their whole  paper with the correct color first, wins.

Game Modifications:

For younger children 1-3 years old, they can take any colored block and put it on the corresponding color. This is a great way to show incorrect matches, which helps with color recognition and beginning to identify the difference in colors.

Shape Sort:

On the back of the colored construction paper you can trace specific shapes that match the block set. So this round children are matching the shapes instead of the colors. For younger children you can do all the same shapes, all circles for example. For older children they can match the color and multiple shapes, a blue circle, a blue triangle, a cylinder ect.

Game Modifications:

To make this even more challenging you can trace a specific color match picture and they have to use the shapes to build the picture exactly in 3D. For example you could trace a house using a triangle, a square, and two rectangles, see picture.
