The Problem:

Six months after the birth of my son, the forecast was cloudy with a 100% chance of hair fall. Hair was everywhere, it was on my kids, in the fridge, and on  any surface I had contact with. Our  Kirby vacuum had become entangled with rouge hairs, and lost the war.  Many times I watched the contorted face of a family member , as they frantically retrieved hair from a mouth full of food. Hair was everywhere, except on my head.

The Rizzo:

Furthermore, I  was  not just a tired mama, but  an exasperated one, with thinning hair. To conquer my predicament I ventured out to a hair salon in the middle of a Global Pandemic. With my mask virtually glued to my face, the hair stylist heard my pleas and got to cutting. Upon exiting the salon, the wind blew my neatly styled Rizzo cut, revealing what would be my daily battle: Keeping my hair looking the way it did in the salon. Fat chance, the Rizzo looked great on the ladies on Pinterest but it just didn’t look good on me. If anything it only accentuated the bags under my eyes.  And alluded to the fact that I had recently stepped out of Doc’s DeLorean from the year 1980. Moreover, I had unruly, thinning curly hair, with bangs.

Naturally, the only solution was to find ways to grow my hair back.  The goal,  to restore the healthy, naturally curly hair that I had once known, pre-baby. After much research, I discovered new hair methods, and tools that encouraged unusual hair growth for me.  From September 2020- June 2021, my hair grew 6 inches and the Rizzo bangs are no more. Though hair fall still occurs, it is not enough to break the drains, or inspire a trending haircut at the local salon.

The Method:

Following extensive research on hair growth, the conclusion I came to was, less is more. Many articles spoke about protecting the hair from unnecessary damage. For me this meant refraining from straightening my hair with high heat. Instead of washing my hair every other day, washing took place only twice a week. My hair is naturally curly, to prevent damage, I tried not to brush my hair as often as often. Heat less waves also allowed my style to last longer. The method was simple: I would dampen my hair just before bed, run some coconut oil through the strands and place my hair in a high bun. In the morning, I would undo the bun and have soft curls/waves. This style would last for a few days.

The Tools:

This Butterfly Pea Tea Hair tonic features two hero players that aid in hair growth and hydration. Rice Water and Butterfly Pea Tea form a hair tonic with powerful properties for healthier hair. The purple huge is inviting and calming.

Items Needed/ Steps to Make Tonic:

1 cup of Basmati Rice

3 Cups clean water

Butterfly Pea Tea

Mason Jar or Spray Bottle

Steps:

  1. Brew a 3 oz cup of Butterfly Pea Tea ( I put four flowers in for extra strength) set aside
  2. Rinse the raw rice with warm water to remove impurities.
  3. Place the rice in a glass jar or container, covering fully with clean warm water. Add the tea.
  4.  Next cover the mixture and allow it to sit for two days.
  5. Strain mixture into a clean jar.
  6. To use: shampoo hair as normal then pour the tonic over your hair, being sure you massage it in to the scalp. Allow it to sit on hair for at least 30 mins, or overnight.

In the Summertime, the silk head scarf can be too hot. A silk pillowcase has all the benefits of the silk scarf but offers more freedom, and a cooler temperature. I noticed after a few weeks of use, that my face felt softer and was breaking out less.

A silk scarf is an excellent way to protect curly hair styles. Since traditional cotton pillow cases can be drying and damaging, the silk scarf offers more moisture. I found that over time my hair became significantly softer, and breakage became less and less evident.

Next up, these satin scrunchies have taken me back to the 90’s and I love them. They are easy to use and remove which is key in protecting your hair from harm. The leopard print added a fun and spunky touch to my hairstyles.

To be honest the idea of dry shampoo sort of freaked me out. In all actuality it is quite refreshing, and isn’t as harsh as regular shampoos. An added bonus is that it makes getting ready in the morning, that much quicker. This dry shampoo in particular has a lovely tropical scent and gives nice volume to the hair.

Now Castor Oil is the holy grail of oil, it has many different uses. It is much thicker than typical oils and seems to adhere better than most. With that said adding the oil to a carrier helps it distribute more evening. Instead of placing it directly on my hair, I found that putting it in my conditioner yielded the best result. About ¼ cup is enough for a large bottle of conditioner.

Undoubtedly,  I can’t say enough about Youth Theory Collagen. It has cleared my skin significantly, and my hair is growing faster and stronger. An added benefit is that the collagen brings relief to my knees as well, I have an old dance injury that often acts up.  While taking this supplement, I notice a huge difference in my mobility and range of motion. Working out has also become less painful, and my knee actually feels more stable than it has in the past.

Though there are many benefits, I must mention you must mix this with hot water by placing it in the bottom of your mug, then stir vigorously. If you don’t it will clump up on you.
