As parents we teach our children things that come naturally to ourselves. Naturally,  we demonstrate how to brush their teeth, eat at the dinner table and even how they are to conduct themselves in public. When it comes to teaching your children to pray beyond thanking God for their food it can be a forgotten value.

Pray Like Jesus Did :

Unquestionably, Jesus himself taught his disciples to pray with the Lord’s Prayer in Luke 11:1-4, As always his timing and lessons were carried out at the right times perfectly catered to his students. Always a teacher, Jesus did not teach prayer before he  himself modeled it for his students. Clearly, this was done to encourage a hunger and thirst for Him. Furthermore, this lesson is just the foundation for nurturing a healthy prayer  life in your children. Share the following with your children:

Prayer Theme Verse:

The Lord’s Prayer ( teach this in small segments over the course of a couple weeks, or choose one verse to focus on.) Luke 11:1-4

Jesus in Heaven May your name be praised

May your will be done in Heaven and On Earth

Give me what I need today

Forgive me for my sins

And help me to forgive those that hurt me

Children’s Bible:

A Word on Bibles, we have quite a few versions of the Bible, these are our favorites for very young kids all the way to middle school aged kids.  Of course God’s word can be accessible at any age but having  a version with language that children can understand is vital to their comprehension and spiritual growth:

9 and up : The Action Bible

Ages 5-8 years old: The Jesus Storybook Bible

Ages 1-4 years: The Toddler’s Bible

Lesson:

To begin, children will learn that Jesus prayed many times in the Bible. Moreover, it was so important to Him that He taught his disciples and those around Him how to pray too.Practicing this prayer every night has been a lovely way for my family and I to grow closer together.

Four Ways to Help Your Children Pray:

1. Pray Outloud

2. Write Prayers Down, 1-2 times a week record the prayers of your children down. I suggest using a prayer journal like this one from Joyfull Birds via Amazon

3. Encourage Kids to lead prayer time, or repeat prayers if younger.

4. Highlight when prayer is used in the Bible
