Prayer Room Aren't Magic:

Prayer for me always occurred while driving or when a few spare moments presented themselves in the course of a day. It wasn’t until I saw the movie War Room that my attitude and approach to prayer changed all together. The very clear message of the film was that prayer is one of the biggest, untapped sources of power that Christians have in their arsenals. Not only is it a forceful weapon, it is direct access to Jesus Himself. I knew the prayer room wasn’t magic but  it would act as a catalyst for a more obedient prayer life. This was something my life needed, desperately.

In preparation for forming my prayer room, I claimed the space just outside of our grand bedroom. I gathered all the things that would draw me into an attitude of reverent prayer. Here is my list of five prayer room essentials:

Candles:

Candles: One of the first items that came to mind were scented candles. While traveling in Italy we visited many churches and each one had a signature scent, incense. When I asked my professor why, he said that the incense represented prayers rising to Heaven. Naturally, I wanted to mimic that sentiment with candles (no dust for the kids) . These Meyers candles are lovely, they are made with essential oils and other natural ingredients. The scent profiles are inviting.  Each candle has a burn time of 25-35 hours and the glass jar can be repurposed at the end of use.

Journals:

Journals, Pretty Ones: Since seeing the movie back in 2015 I have hand written each of my prayers. This practice was new to me, but it brought an element of focus and discipline to my prayer life. It is also nice to reflect on past prayers and see the various ways that God answered  or resolved each one.

Pens:

Pens: The teacher in me has to have a good pen, they are common tools of the trade. I like these journal pens because they come in a variety of colors. The pens are bleed free and can be used to highlight or underline on thin bible paper too.

Family Pictures and Momentos: As my War Room materialized artifacts and mementos close to my heart, quickly found a home in this space. I printed pictures of friends and family, found my  European rosaries, and a gold cross given to me as a little girl. All of these items elevated the atmosphere of the small yet mighty space.

The Set Up:

A Comfy Chair: I do have to say that as a thrifty girl I haven’t done much furniture shopping, brand new. When this journey began I envisioned a velvety, Victorian chair in a royal blue or pea green ,seemed a perfect fit. That of course was in my dreams because those chairs are expensive! I found an oversized chair with soft grey stripes, (originally Target) for $15.00 on Offer Up. A quick clean and a spritz of perfume and my chair was ready for use.
